In August 2019, Bombardier Transportation, Orascom Construction and the Arab Contractors signed an agreement with the National Authority for Tunnels to design, build and operate two new monorail lines in Egypt.

The contract includes EPC works for both lines and, upon completion, Operation and Maintenance (O&M) for 30 years. The first monorail line will extend 54 km from East Cairo to the New Administrative Capital with 22 stations and a depot. The second line will be around 42 km in length connecting the Giza Governorate to Sixth of October City with 12 stations and a depot.

Orascom Construction will design and build all infrastructure and civil works, including stations, guideway structures and new depot buildings.

In addition, construction of this project is executed on an EPC + Finance basis Seabetwhereby the consortium structured and arranged financing on behalf of the client for a large portion of the foreign funding required. The ECA-backed funding is provided by a syndicate of international banks led by JP Morgan and supported by UKEF.

This project is the longest monorail system in the world, and will enable fast, sustainable, comfortable and safe transportation for 45,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
